Municipal records disposition files, 1962-1982.

From 1963 to 1987 any custodian of municipal records could file a petition with the municipality's governing body requesting permission to destroy specified series of public records that had been maintained for a minimum retention period. Upon receipt of the petition, the governing body would get a date for a public hearing on the matter. Notice of the hearing had to be published once a week for two consecutive weeks in a local newspaper and a copy of the notice had to be mailed to the director of the Department of Archives and History at least twenty days before the hearing (Ala. Code 11-47-152 [1975]). This series is composed of files concerning the retention and disposition of municipal records. Included is correspondence inquiring about legislation governing records disposition and retention periods of specific record series; notices informing the archives director of the intended destruction of public records; and copies of the acknowledgments of the notices.
